Awkward-Awesome Thursday

Can you tell I have tons of time on my hands?
My blog posts increase with boredom free time.
Thanks to high school algebra, I can tell you it's a direct correlation.

Awkward:

*Have you guys seen the Citibank commercial- the one where this couple talks about having a great time using their Citibank points, blah blah. But, then you see the lady climbing solo on this:

Does anyone else find this PROFOUNDLY dangerous???

*I've watched the same pair of shoes on eBay for the last 3 weeks, each time missing the auction. And each time, messaging the seller, giving some cheeky response as to why I missed it. Each time promising the seller "if you re-list it, I will buy it"..whoopsie...

* No matter if I have one day off or or two weeks, as in this case, my diet on a non-working day is AWFUL. RANDOM. I mean, I start off strong, but quickly stumble throughout the day. What possesses me to eat the things I eat? Case in point, let's evaluate my caloric intake today, shall we: small bowl of oatmeal+ blackberries and turkey sausage, six Mrs. Fields thumbprint cookies, whole grain cereal dipped in butter, 3 Tootsie Rolls, Campbell's Chunky Noodle Soup, another round of cereal and butter, a small baking sheet of seasoned fries with Ranch dressing, and a can of mushrooms . Now I feel weird telling you that. Perhaps its a vitamin deficiency....

*Also on a day off, you will find me frequently in some sort of T-shirt and PJ/ sweatpant combo with....a pair of obnoxious shoes. Wedges, heels, summer sandals, whatever I fancy. Just me, and my shoes, obnoxiously snacking...

Awesome:

* Gosh, I can already tell. Just Dance for Xbox is going to change my life. Watch out Black Eyed Peas, I've now got skilllzzz.

*Speaking of shoes and days off, I have the BEST tip ever. Do you have those pesky new leather shoes that are a bit snug, or that you know are gonna rub blisters? Heels, boots, flats. Wet them. Yup, put them on and dunk them in water and then let them dry to your feet. I will commonly take a shower with my new ballet flats on, and then do my chores around the house. You're welcome.

* What is all this buzz about the book series, The Hunger Games? I see the hype about how great the books are, and now there is a movie coming out? It looks great from the trailer- I might have to check this out.

* Man, I'm really digging glasses. The big chunky kind. Ive had them since the 3rd grade, and just now really embracing them. I'm on the hunt for some like this:

Ketchup

I've been on hiatus, friends. Yes, I've missed you, too. While I have no real post in mind and warning you of the randomness, let's  "ketchup", shall we?

============================================

My little-bloggy turned one... uhhh a few days ago. A whole year of writing and rants- I still can't believe it's been that long. I've had fun writing, thus far, and am glad I've stuck with it. High five for dedication!  A special thanks to you for reading- and giving back your humorous feedback!

==========================================================

I'll tell you a little secret.
Shh..
Don't tell though.

I've not put up even ONE holiday decoration  or bought ANY Christmas presents.

Gasp.
I know.
Scrooge just can't seem to get it together.
I love looking at everyone else's beautiful trees, ornaments, menorahs, snowmen and such.
And usually, I am all over it. But, alas, we are bare over here.
I'm not sure what it is, it feels like I am waiting on something??
Perhaps I'll try to work on it this weekend.. Perhaps...

What DO I love, however??
This HUGE free tutorial kit of some fab DIY decorations/ideas from Jones Design Company.
Man, she's got some lovely stuff..

I made a few things from it last year.

And when I actually DO get around to presents, I am going to go back and grab her gift tags. So cute!

===========================================================

Got the best little email saying my December Birchbox has been shipped, and on it's way!Just love the little pink package in the mail!

====================================================

Here are a few precious things that I got to hear this week, at work:

* Mrs. Lindsey, I know how to brush my teeth, now..(I would hope so, you are in the 3rd grade)
* Mrs. Lindsey, I wear an 18-20 in pants now. I am a real grown-up boy. What size do you wear?
* Mrs. Lindsey, I know what sound a peacock makes.. (Ummmm, what then??)

My favorite:
A group of older kids were working on inferencing. I read the prompt:
"We all got down the board. Mary rolled the dice. Janet collected two rental properties. Dave passed GO and collected $200"
I asked them: a) what were they doing, and b) what key words help you to know

One boy wipes his brow, nervously looking at his teammates. With a whisper, he answers:
"Gambling??"

Hahaha....

Awkward-Awesome Thursday

Awkward
-Pulling up to a stop light. Car next to me is cutting, smelling, and rolling the fattest cigar I have ever seen. It's 7:00 in the morning. Driver looks away sheepishly. Guess some of us don't need coffee.
  - Explaining to a 5 year old that "No, God really didn't make my legs gray and hole-y like cheese. Yes, yes I promise they are just tights. Um, no, you can't see."
  - Do you ever catch ole Coach Lou Holtz on ESPN? One of the sports commentators?  His lateral lisp is so ferocious, it's like nails on a chalkboard to me.

Awesome
   - Lays Dill Pickle potato chips. A pleasant alternative to heavenly Salt and Vinegar chips.
  - The Twilight: Breaking Dawn soundtrack that I've been blasting since Tues. Do I have all of them so far? Yes, yes I do. On an ACTUAL CD. Don't judge.
  - coming to the realization that some people just can't see the forest for the trees. You wish, hope, pray, beg for a difference. Silence. You beg, plead, pray more fervently. Nothing. But then one day you wake up and realize all the energy you spend wishing, hoping, praying, is all a waste. Because they can't see the larger picture, and never will. And that is ok.

It's Here! November Birchbox..

Lookie what came in the mail for me!

The November Birchbox, and my first one ever. A few weeks ago I signed up to receive this little nifty monthly present. When I staggered home from school today, Mr. Postman had my surprise ready for me!

Drum roll, please...

So, if you can't read the card, I received:
  • Anastasia Beverly Hills Mascara
  • Be Fine Night Cream
  • Kerastase Hair Elixir Oil
  • Supersmile Whitening Toothpaste
  • Alex and Isabelle Pony Tail Hair Wraps
Ok, so I am pretty excited, except for that they didn't include the ponytail wraps. No biggie, since I have trillions of them anyway. But the other stuff? Right up my ally!

Slow and Steady Wins the Race..

Hooray for Halfway!!

Remember my latest super adventurous project? Did you guess what I'm working on?
Yes, a quilt.
Yes, I'm under 30.
Yes, this is only like my 5th sewing project EVER.
Move over Maw- Maw.

Alllllllll last month I painstakingly cut, cursed, screamed, sewed, and ironed the 504 pieces for the top. Now that I have all the pieces, I've started to lay everything out.
Here is another sneak peak
('Scuse the upstairs lighting)

And my other lofty goal?
I'm REALLY hoping I can knock it out by the end of the year.
Yeah, the WHOLE quilt.

Less and Less

Mi madre is an accountant by trade. Naturally, she likes numbers, the stock market, advanced trigonometry, inventing new budgets, calculators and such. Snooze.
A few weeks ago, out of the blue, she shared that she read some Gap stores were really struggling finacially, sales were down, and some stores would be shut.
Gasp.
Horror.

Do you still shop at Gap? How 'bout on a regular basis? Their kiddo clothes are pretty cute, but what about for adults? I like it in waves. Some seasons I LOVE it. But then some seasons- fuhgettabout it.

Figuring I would go help stimulate the economy, I popped into mine.
40% off the Sale? Gold mine.

Here is what I nabbed:

annnd...

Did I pay those online prices? No way, madre, no way. I know better.
After the discount, I paid $8, $10 and $9, respectively.
Sometimes you just gotta huff it to the store.

Purr.. and a Blog Sale?

Happy Halloween, friends!

I decided to go up to Nashville for the weekend and visit the BF. She had some church-friend Halloween parties on her list, and she so kindly invited me up. She is a "speechy" too, and totally rocks some AAC equipment.
As you can see, we decided to  "theme" it. Fighting crime all nite long. However, she makes a more convincing Batgirl, than my Wal-mart Catwoman.
Meow.

I was unpacking last nite, and gave my closet a double take. There are several items I have that still have tags on them, tags pulled but never worn, or worn maybe once, that I KNOW I won't get around to wearing. I am toying with the idea of a blog sale.
Let me round everything up, and let you know!

Birchbox Bandwagon

I'll let you in on a little secret.
I take a quiet pride in the fact that I am fiercely independent. I march to my own beat. A doer and a thinker. Not easily influenced.
 It's also a flaw.

However, if you give me ANY sort of beauty product review, feedback on a product, persuasive story, samples - Bam!
Total Sucker.
I will fall for it every time.
AND buy two.

SO that's why after TONS of consideration I am joining Birchbox. Eeee! So excited!

What it a Birchbox? A samples lover's paradise. Fun stuff without the guilt.
Essentially, it's a pre-selected box of high-end beauty samples that comes right to your door, EVERY month, for $10. Kinda like a magazine subscription, that you can cancel at any time. You fill out a brief beauty survey, they pick out items for you, and it's mailed to your hot little hands.

Yes, I realize this is sounding like an info-mercial. It's not. I won't be getting Ginsu knives and a free Snuggie with my purchase. I've seen a few friends with their Birboxes, and the packages always look so lovely. Girly and lovely.
So lovely, in fact, I am nabbing the picture off the website for you to see.

These are just some the types of products you could possibly get. I think you get 4-5 a month, and even can get full size bottles.
Good stuff, right?

You've Got to Hind Your Love Away....

Sometimes it is perfectly acceptable to hide. Put a blanket on your head, and hide.

I've come home with a case of the aches.
Either I REALLY "worked it out" at step aerobics ( gurrrrl, I can work some "step-touch now) or the flu is whispering my name.

I wish I was crafting. I wish I was DIY'ing.

Tonight it's me and the blanket.
And a Robitussin induced coma.
Sniff, sniff.

Oh, the Power of Technology

Holy smokes, you guys are going to love this!

I was tooling around today, and somehow found out that Goodwill (yes, THAT Goodwill) is....

ONLINE!
Now how on Earth are they going to manage that?

If you are familiar with the eBay format, this seems to be very similar, using the same auction format. However, after looking at the prices, shoooo weee. They seem a little steep. I don't think I will use it much, but it might be another resource to find "hard to come by" items!

Good Luck!

Whoops A Daisy..

SOS!!
A little sewing help, please.

I am sewing along, and then all of a sudden it's a RAILROAD of thread. Then, it goes back to smooth, even stitches. What's the deal?? I am not zooming fabric thru, nor have I rigged my bobbin wrong.

"Sew" annoying...

Sorry.
I had to.

Sugar Loaf

Ahhh.. finally.
Fall Break.
One of my favorite-est times of the year.

Every year, about this time, some of my dearest friends and I pack up a car and head to her family's cabin in the Heber Springs area. It's a weekend of laughter, squeals, red lipstick, staying up late, inappropriateness, and fun.

This year was no exception. Radiating strength and inner Girl-Power, we decided to pack up our old-school Timberlands and try to hike a local mountain mound, Sugar Loaf.

Shoo-weee.

It was a real hike-walking up trails and then actual climbing the face of the rock.
It was a beautiful climb!

I promise I have 2 arms.

When we reached the summit, I was struck by how blessed I really am. So in awe of the glorious things the God has given us.

The Gang coming down from the summit. So thankful for them!

Chevy

Is it just me, or is there an INSANE amount of chevron popping up in stores and in home projects?? Maybe I'm just dreaming it, but I see it everywhere. Beautiful, crisp, clean, classic stripes.

For your viewing pleasure, take a look at some of my recent faves:

Fully jumping aboard this chevron train, I've recently started a "chevy" project of my own.
(chugga- chugga- choo-chooo)
 A HUGE project.
Something that seems WAAAAAAY beyond my skill level.
It might take a few weeks.
Or even months, depending on how much reality TV I watch patience I have.

Needing a smidge-of-a hint?
Well, ok.
Just a quick looksie.

Have you guessed it?
That's all you get, friends!

If It Ain't Broke..

You guys know the saying.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Remember this post?

Soo.. I made another one. This time it's gray/camel/ black snow leopard- tiger print-ish.

Yes, this officially makes me dorky.
Dorky with a snow leopard skirt.
Boo yah.

Ikat Get Enough Fall

Hey, fall friends!
So glad the weather is starting to dip in temperatures. Yesterday, I left work kinda late and it was so nice out. My mind started to zone out into leaves, and cooler weather, possible boots I am looking at, and textured tights and fall skirts.
Fall skirts?
Hmm...

Somehow on my way home, my car steered itself over to the fabric store. While there, I picked up a fall-ish ikat print and some good 'ole elastic.
(I promise its not this "rasta-farian" in person).

And after a short bit and some Jay Leno, there's nothing like a little Friday Nite Fall Skirt makin'.
Easy peasy!

Wanna make one?
Here's how:

YOU'LL NEED
* 1- 1 1/2 yards of some type of stretch fabric. Mine is polyester/rayon blend with a bit of stretch.
* Elastic for waist. I have a 2 in. elastic band, but a 1 1/2 would work, too. I got a yard of this just to be safe.
* Sewing machine, pins, scissors, thread, etc.

A BIT OF HELP: I tried to follow this tutorial but realized Sharroll at Jo Ann's fabric cut my fabric wrong. (Duh, Sharroll I knew what I was talking about in the first place) So I tweaked it.

STEPS

Go ahead and open your fabric, print side down. Lay your elastic at the top, on the long side. You are going to start to make a case for your elastic to slide thru. Starting at one side, using your elastic as a pattern, fold the fabric over and pin.

Keep pinning and sliding the elastic down, until the top is pinned.

Next, go sew a straight line where you just pinned. You might also have to re-watch the Instructional Video that came with your new sewing machine, since this is your 2nd time sewing just to make sure.

Next, lay fabric out again, and measure your desired length for you. I chose knee length, but a longer skirt would be cute, too. Cut and go back and hem it.

Now, you have a little case at the top and your skirt hemmed. Take your elastic, measure it to your waist, and cut appropriately.
Now, the boring part. Turn on some tube. Grab your elastic, and slide, squench, and bunch it into the case at the top. This will give it some soft pleating.

Smooth out your pleats, nice and even. Turn your fabric print side in, and pin the edges together. Sew up your elastic and where you just pinned- AND you are done!

Do a little fist pump and victory dance that you didn't cry or say ugly words at your machine at your completed project!
